A Winter Wedding at Kingsmills Hotel, Inverness

There is something a little bit magical about a winter wedding.

The darker evenings, the soft glow of candlelight, cosy interiors and that feeling of everyone gathering together somewhere warm and beautiful. And when you add the elegant surroundings of the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness, you have a pretty special setting for a wedding day.

I recently had the pleasure of photographing an intimate winter wedding at the Kingsmills, and it was one of those days that reminded me just how beautiful smaller weddings can be.

Intimate, relaxed and completely personal

Rather than a huge guest list, this wedding was all about spending the day with the people who mattered most.

There is something lovely about an intimate wedding where everyone knows each other. The atmosphere feels relaxed and personal, with more time to actually enjoy the people around you, soak up the little moments and properly celebrate together.

The Kingsmills has some gorgeous spaces that work particularly well for smaller weddings. The Adams Room, for example, is a beautiful intimate space with historic features and a lovely, cosy feel - perfect for a smaller celebration.

And this is one of the things I love about the Kingsmills as a wedding venue: intimate doesn't mean you have to compromise on atmosphere or elegance.

Candlelight, winter light and all the cosy vibes

Winter weddings have a completely different feel to summer weddings, and I absolutely loved photographing this one.

As the daylight faded, the candles and warm lighting really came into their own. There was something wonderfully atmospheric about photographing a wedding surrounded by flickering candlelight, beautiful details and the warmth of the hotel while outside it felt properly wintry.

For me, these are the moments that make winter weddings so special.

The quiet moments before the ceremony.

The excitement as everyone gathers.

The candlelight during dinner.

The laughter between friends and family.

The little glances between the couple when they think nobody is watching.

And, of course, getting outside for a few photographs together, even when the Scottish weather decides to remind us that it is winter!

Although this wedding was intimate, the Kingsmills isn't limited to smaller celebrations.

The hotel has a whole range of wedding spaces, from intimate rooms for smaller gatherings right through to the much larger Kingsmills Suite. The suite can accommodate large celebrations, with space for ceremonies, wedding breakfasts and evening receptions, making the hotel incredibly flexible depending on your guest list.

So whether you're imagining a small wedding surrounded by your closest family and friends, or a much bigger Highland celebration with a packed dance floor, the Kingsmills can offer a space to suit.

And being able to have everything in one place - getting ready, your ceremony, photographs, food, drinks and celebrations - makes the whole day feel wonderfully easy.

Winter weddings in Inverness

There is something particularly lovely about getting married in Inverness in winter.

You don't need perfect sunshine for beautiful wedding photographs. In fact, I think winter can give us some of the most atmospheric images of the year.

Soft, moody light.

Warm interiors.

Candlelit rooms.

Cosy moments.

And that unmistakable Scottish feeling that makes winter weddings feel just a little bit more romantic.

As a photographer, I love working with all of that. Rather than trying to make a winter wedding look like a summer one, I want to embrace what makes it different.

The darkness. The warmth. The atmosphere. The emotion.
